We spend our lives calculating how much we have, how much we want, and how much we don’t have. And we compare this to what everyone else has (or to the idea of perfection we get from the media) – a cycle that will always end with the same conclusion: We are lacking. We never have enough. We never are enough.
There is an answer to the Never Feeling Enough Problem: Gratitude.
When we are grateful for our lives and the things around us, it opens up a new perspective.
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
That simple sentence has inspired the way I view the world, and the thoughts that I have on a daily basis. If something so simple can provoke change and bring gratitude into our daily lives, lets make it a habit that sticks.
I created a Gratitude Jar last month, it started out as something I did every morning writing words of gratitude and popping them into a jar. This routine created intention for my day and brought me into the present moment.
My outlook on life has shifted. I no longer feel like I am lacking from the moment I wake up and instead of thinking about my to-do list, I appreciate the food that I have, the time that I have, the people that I have.
Appreciating yourself for your strengths AND your imperfections means you feel more connected to life. Of course we all have down days, and its not about shifting focus from them, its about finding space to understand them, and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Gratitude is a practice we need to create each day, time to connect with our thoughts, understand that we are always enough and we have always been enough. We just need to notice it by appreciating the good, the bad and everything in between.
By nurturing your mind and your body, gratitude for life and appreciation for yourself will come.
Sometimes it’s the simple things that make life wonderful: write those notes down.
